If you are new to Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered, play Adventure Classic first. It gives you monster experience, Research Points and the coins that open new research, so it moves almost every part of the game forward. You start with four monsters: Godzilla (1990), Gigan, Megalon and Anguirus.
The fighting itself is simple to pick up. Reviewers describe it as a party brawler rather than a technical fighting game, so the biggest gains come from a few habits: block, throw things, and spend your energy.
Game modes explained
The remaster has several single-player modes plus local and online multiplayer.
| Mode | What you do | Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Adventure Classic | Eight 1v1 fights in a row that get harder, ending aboard the alien Mothership | Any monster |
| Adventure Gauntlet | Six stages of 1v2 and 2v1 fights | Monster level 4 |
| Adventure Challenge | Random events with different objectives for each monster | Monster level 7 |
| Survival | Fight one enemy after another for as long as you last | None |
| Destruction | Destroy as much of a city as you can before time runs out | None |
| Custom Battle | Set up your own match, monsters and location | None |
| Online | 1v1 Quickplay matches | Platform subscription (see Crossplay) |
Adventure Challenge is the mode the "Adventure+" achievement refers to. There is no menu item called Adventure+ in the game.
Monster levels and Research Points
Each monster has its own level, from 1 to 10. Experience is shared across modes, so a level earned in Survival or Adventure counts everywhere. Higher levels open the harder Adventure modes listed above.
Research Points are a separate currency. They fill research projects in the G-Force Lab, which is how you unlock the rest of the roster, extra locations and gallery items. Survival mode gives double Research Points but, according to Kaiju Live TV, no experience. That makes it the mode to use once you have a project waiting. The full process is on the unlock guide.
Power-ups and the arena
A UFO flies over each fight and drops power-up tokens. They can restore health, refill energy, call in Mothra for an air strike, or give you temporary Rage. The red token with a Godzilla icon is the Rage one.
The arena is a weapon too. Buildings near you are highlighted blue, and turn red when you are close enough to pick them up. You can also lift tanks, trains and rocks and throw them at your opponent. On city maps, watch for a large freeze tank that drives toward the fight and can freeze either monster for a few seconds.
Five beginner tips
These tips come from a beginner video by Digimon Competitive, recorded on Switch 2.
- Block a lot. Blocking stops normal hits, beams, Rage-boosted moves and thrown buildings. Against the computer, block its attack string, then punish when it stops.
- Use your get-up attack. When you are knocked down, press attack to hit back as you stand. Godzilla's is a low tail sweep. Do not use it every time, because human players will learn to jump over it.
- Learn your directional moves. Holding a direction changes many attacks, so a back plus fierce attack is different from a plain fierce attack. Every monster has its own combos.
- Throw everything. Buildings, tanks and trains cost no energy and deal free damage from range. They can also interrupt an opponent who is charging a big move.
- Spend your energy often. You do not need a full bar. Godzilla can fire a small fireball or a long beam, and beams can chip damage through a block.
If you find Adventure too hard at first, Kaiju Live TV suggests turning the AI difficulty to Easy in the settings while you level up.
Basic controls
The game supports controllers fully, and Steam lists it as "Gamepad Recommended". Players on Steam report that it is playable on keyboard, but there is no option to remap keyboard keys.
What we can confirm about buttons so far:
| Action | Xbox | PlayStation | Switch 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fierce attack | X | Square | To be confirmed |
| Throw (while holding) | B | Circle | To be confirmed |
| Block | To be confirmed | To be confirmed | X |
Other basics: hold your energy attack to charge it (a full bar is needed for a full charge), press attack while knocked down for a get-up attack, and grab with the grab button before throwing. We have not found an official button chart yet, so check the in-game controls menu for the full list. We will update this table when we can source it.
Try every monster for free in Tournament mode
Two separate creators point out a setting called Tournament mode. Turning it on in the options makes everything available in Custom Battle, without unlocking it first. It is meant for tournaments and groups of friends, and it is also a quick way to test each monster's moves before you spend hours unlocking your favourite.
According to Kaiju Live TV, it applies to Custom Battle. Whether it affects achievements or your normal progress is to be confirmed.
